For instance, Instagram and TikTok could slow down all users’ ability to mindlessly scroll on their platforms for hours on end. While there is no empirical evidence yet to support the Ferguson effect, according to Wolfe, he and co-author Justin Nix, PhD, of the University of Louisville, examined whether the negative publicity surrounding these events might have had a negative effect on police willingness to engage in community partnerships, where police work together w. Social media content can quickly become viral, and once it is shared, it. the study is to take into consideration the negative effect of misleading information shared in. Justice and Public Safety 9 Ways Social Media Benefits Police A new report discusses in depth just how social media can be used to support law enforcement. Perry suggests that instead of age verification, there are steps tech companies could take to make their platforms less harmful, less addictive, across the board. For many teens, cyberbullying is far more cruel and damaging than in-person bullying. medias fake news threatens law enforcement officers. Social media sites are being used by a large number of police departments across the United States to inform the community about current events in a cost-effective and efficient manner. For this reason, social media platforms already ban kids under 13 from signing up to their sites - but children can easily skirt the rules, both with and without their parents’ consent. However, social media can also have negative effects on police officers, such as when officers are harassed or when false information is spread about the police. On the federal level, companies are already prohibited from collecting data on children under 13 without parental consent under the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act. There is no precedent in the United States for such drastic regulation of social media, although several states have similar rules in the works. “I think that’s going to be the weak link in the whole thing, because kids drive their parents insane,” Bernstein said. Instead, they are making the parents responsible. Police departments need to have solid social media rules in place that every employee is familiar with. The problem, she said, is that the Utah rules don’t require social networks to prevent kids from going online. “Children may be put at increased risk if these laws are enforced in such a way that they’re not allowed to some privacy, if they are not allowed some ability for freedom of speech or autonomy,” said Kris Perry, executive director of the nonprofit Children and Screens: Institute of Digital Media and Child Development. And while parental rights are a central theme of Utah’s new laws, experts point out that the rights of parents and the best interests of children are not always aligned.įor instance, allowing parents to read their kids’ private messages may be harmful to some children, and age verification requirements could give tech companies access to kids’ personal information, including biometric data, if they use tools such as facial recognition to check ages. What’s not clear is if - and how - the new rules can be enforced and whether they will create unintended consequences for kids and teens already coping with a mental health crisis. There are yet undiscovered uses of social media that police could one day use.Utah’s sweeping social media legislation passed this week is an ambitious attempt to shield children and teens from the ill effects of social media and empower parents to decide whether their kids should be using apps like TikTok or Instagram. The social media impact on police brutality has been both positive and negative. While social media can be a powerful tool, particularly for budget-constrained departments, the question of how to best harness social media and integrate its use into daily operations is an open-ended one, according to the report. “Our report thus functions as a crayon box, a modular toolset, that allows other police forces, researchers and industry to look for solutions that fit their particular needs best.” Despite its name, the report is not intended to be a step-by-step guide outlining best practices, researchers wrote it is to "present the variety in best practice applied by different forces in different countries,” the report states. Standing? Neither girl felt like they were standing, exactly. There weren't any toys here earlier, let alone ones that were standing at their eye-level. bigger now, and that they were each staring into the impassive, fabric-y face of a toy Vulpix directly in front of them. All they knew was that everything seemed. Instead, exactly where both girls had been standing, there was a pair of small, plush Vulpixes - one normal and one Alolan.Neither Blanche nor Candela had any idea what had happened. Then the light faded, leaving the two young women nowhere to be seen. The pair were too busy bickering to notice her, only realising that something was wrong when their own bodies became engulfed in that same, pink light. She floated through the wall, her eyes glowing pink. There was no-one else here and the two arguing girls were inside. She knew how to make them stop - and could already imagine what a cute, cuddly pair they'd make - but, she couldn't. She'd never seen two humans get so angry with each other. "You'd rather spend time with that idiot than me!?"īaya heard enough. "Ugh, next time I'm going on holiday with Spark!" said Candela. "I'm just saying it's more likely that you did it, that's all," said Blanche irritably. "Are you saying it's my fault!? You can't even admit what you did!?" "Well, you know I've never lost anything, so-" started Blanche, before Candela interjected. "Stop telling me to relax, Blanche!" screeched Candela. You're supposed to relax, not stress out like this." "But there's no sense in worrying about it. "About as much as mine, I assume," answered a light-haired woman with a ponytail, who looked only a little irritated. "You lost our mobiles at the airport! Do you have any idea how much my phone cost!?" "What do you mean, 'relax'?" shouted one girl, a dark-skinned, short-haired woman who seemed like she was about to explode. Her curiousity piqued, the ghost-type Pokémon floated closer to the window to take a look at what was going on. Maybe it was time she headed back home before she got tempted to perform an outdoor-transformation again.īut, as she passed one of the houses on her route back, she couldn't help but notice the two, loud, angry-sounding voices coming from within. She couldn't risk getting caught! What would the humans do to her if they found out that she'd been changing their girls into cuddly toy Pokémon? She didn't want to find out. Not here, out of the safety of her room in the Strange House and especially not when there were two witnesses standing right there. She'd make such a cute plush! A perfect new doll for her collection!. She flew away as fast as she could, trying not to stop and think about how much she wanted to transform that "Hilda" girl. So, who should I make these out to.?"īaya didn't stick around to hear the rest of the conversation. I'm heading out on holiday to Kalos tomorrow, to a luxury hotel in Lumiose City. "You know, you're lucky you saw me today. "Oh, sure thing," said Hilda, smiling at the other girls. "Please sign a some autographs for us, Miss Champion!" said the black-haired girl. "Yeah, that's me," said Hilda, slightly embarrassedly. "Oh wow, it's really you!" said the pigtailed girl, as the pair reached the other girl. They didn't notice Baya, instead running towards another girl, who was walking alone through the town. They were so weird, so fun to observe! She was wondering where she should go tonight when, suddenly, a pair of girls ran past her - one with brown hair done up in a pair of pigtails, tied in place with two flowers and the other with long, black hair, her fringe poking beneath the brim of her pink hat. She liked playing with her dolls, of course, but sometimes she enjoyed a night watching humans. You've been warned! Language: English Words: 25,405 Chapters: 7/? Truth be known, what I really needed from the beginning was a Mac netbook and now I have it. Reading in double-column view with full-screen turned on is very similar to the experience on the iPad and it's just another reason why the Air is gradually edging out the iPad as far as I'm concerned. My new 11-in MacBook Air with its 16:9-aspect screen is just about perfect for the Kindle for Mac app. It just needs a bit of attitude changing, in the same way that reading on the iPhone is against convention but equally attractive. While popular prejudice holds that a book must be held in the hand and at a reasonable distance from the eye, the new convention is that books can be read from a distance in the same way you watch a video. I even find that reading on my 24in Cinema Display is restful and thoroughly practical. This is a revelation and makes reading on a computer completely viable for the first time. There's also a handy full-screen button which hides the Mac menu bar so all you see is two pages of a book. Now, with adjustable line length, font sizes and side-by-side columns, the app can be customised to fit a near-full screen window. That has changed in the latest version of Kindle for Mac and the two-column view (similar to that in the pioneering iBooks app) makes a world of difference. The text is clear enough, but to achieve a satisfactory line length it's necessary to run the app in a window rather than full-screen. Previously I've tried reading my Kindle books on the iMac or MacBook Pro and it wasn't the best of experiences. You can read a chapter here, a few paragraphs there and all your devices know precisely where you are up to. Thanks to Whispersync, your Mac, your iPhone, your Kindle and anything else you own will be in sync. The first thing to bear in mind is that the Amazon Kindle eco-system works on almost every computing and mobile platform known to man. In my case it's probably nearer to 99 percent. Kindle readers rule the roost, though, because they do 66 percent of all their reading in digital form. If you combine the netbook and laptop figures you have 45 percent of book reading being done on a computer rather than on a dedicated reader or phone/tablet. Strange, this: Research by Forrester last week showed that 35 percent of electronic book reading is done on a laptop, followed by 32 percent on a Kindle, 15 percent on an iPhone, 12 percent on a Sony e-reader and ten percent on a netbook. Enter the new updated Kindle for Mac* application which, for the first time, adds double-column reading. What you don't hear a lot about is reading books on a Mac or PC. And a growing number of keen readers are perversely attracted to the iPhone or iPod touch as the always-in-your pocket solution. Some swear by the iPad, others are convinced an e-ink reader such as the Amazon Kindle is the only answer. We've spent a lot of time discussing the ideal electronic device for reading books. A decade had passed, and she started to think about what else she wanted do, so she become a chef. When the album reached its 10-year anniversary, Kelis had somewhat of an epiphany about her life. In a way, Kaleidoscope has instead served as a life marker for the singer. From the hilltop you could see the whore Miri and environs and weather permitting, some offshore oil platforms. The first oil rig in Miri was built on top of Canada Hill in 1910. If you have been wondering why Miri is known as oil town, you will have easy time to guess what bukit (hill) the name of Kampung Lereng Bukit refers to. Kampung Lereng Bukit is located alongside Miri-Lutong main road opposite Pelita Commercial Center. Solat Jumaat is conducted weekly at this mosque. A number of halal restaurants nearby - among them are De Kelate, Alamak, Global Ikhwan’s owned Restoran Ikhwan. Ramadhan is a ‘happening’ month for this mosque. The mosque is huge and clean and recently carpeted (as of June 2012). Retired government officers and teachers settled down here in a quiet and clean neighborhood full of trees and schools and this mosque. Piasau is a mature neighborhood in Miri, populated mainly by Muslims. This is the first masjid I came with contact with when I first arrived in Miri during Ramadan 2010. Access is from the back thru Sekolah Agama Rakyat entrance. Parking space is available but very limited. This mall is a popular haunting for Brunei folks looking for excitement during their weekend.ĭespite the name, there is no solat Jumaat here, as Masjid Attaqwa is nearby. If you walk further up along Jalan Merbau, you will come to Bintang Mall, where you can find fast food chains like KFC, MacDonalds, Pizza Hut, One Station, Coffee Beans, Big Apples, etc. Muara, Serai Wangi, Madly, SCR are few worth mentioning. Halal restaurants are plenty around the masjid. North Yu Seng Road, where most happenings at night in Miri take place is just few steps away from mosque entrance. A 4-star Hotel Mega and a mid-sized shopping center are located next to the masjid. Every Friday night, following kuliah maghrib, decent dinner are served not only to jemaah but also passers by regardless of race and religion. This masjid is popular among budget travelers who arrived in the city for the first time and has no place to go. In this posting, I will share some of the mosques in and around Miri, that I have visited during my tour of duty.Ĭonstructed in 1955, probably the oldest mosque around in Miri. In Miri they live around Piasau, Lereng Bukit, Pulau Melayu and Luak Bay, whereas Chinese could be found in Jee Foh, Krokop and Pujut areas. They are minority group making up about 30% of Sarawak population. Moslems in Sarawak generally are Malays, Bruneians and Melanau and others who converted. With population of more than 400,000, Miri is the second largest city in Sarawak. NOTE: This post was first written in 2013. |
